The air around the gate was thick and oppressive, making it hard to breathe. Alex could feel the key almost vibrating in his hand, its cold metal biting into his skin. The swirling vortex before him pulsed with dark energy, casting eerie shadows that seemed to stretch and twist on their own. Behind him, Clara stood frozen, her eyes wide with fear as the forest around them fell silent, as if holding its breath.
The Watchers hadn’t appeared yet, but Alex knew they were near. He could feel their presence, the same bone-deep cold that had haunted him since the day they had stolen the key. They were waiting for him to make his move. He could sense their eyes, hollow and unblinking, watching from the depths of the swirling darkness.
